Will Alfa Romeo, Maserati Build SUVs on Jeep Grand Cherokee Platform ..??

clip_image002
Could the Porsche Cayenne finally have a serious rival when it comes to delivering on- an off-road performance, as well as stunning looks and serious luxury? Perhaps.
According to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, the company is exploring the possibility of building Alfa Romeo and Maserati SUVs based on the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee platform. Marchionne made the comments today on the topic of Chrysler’s third-quarter profits, commenting that the chassis is capable of handling more horsepower. And while it’s expected that Jeep will bring to market an SRT8 version with a 470-hp V8, Marchionne also commented that an Italian-branded SUV could use one of the Ferrari/Maserati engines, including the 4.2-liter V8 and 4.7-liter V8.
While Fiat’s plan for Alfa Romeo includes two all-wheel drive crossovers, this new model could be in addition to them. Currently no Maserati SUV is in the works, but Marchionne has said either model could be brought to market in as little as 12 to 18 months, being built at Chrysler’s Jefferson North facility in Detroit.

History

First Born What We Call Alfa Romeo And Continue.

The history of Alfa Romeo begins in Portello, north west of Milan, Italy, near the road to the Simplon pass. The calendar shows the year 1906 when Alexandre Darracq, Frenchman and one of the pioneers of automobile construction, builds a modern factory on a 36HA lot. The products made as licence holder however, are not popular on the Italian market. Automobile enthusiasts from the surroundings of Portello step in and buy the factory. Soon the Società Anonima Lombarda Fabricia Automobili (A.L.F.A.) is founded. The foundation of the brand Alfa Romeo and over 90 years of fascinating automobiles has been established

The first factory in Portello (Milano) 1910

In 1910 the first A.L.F.A., the 24HP, leaves the Portello factory. The 24HP is designed, like many later models, by Giuseppe Merosi. The 4.1 liter engine with 42HP brings a top speed of over 100 km/h, a sensation for those days! Already from 1911 on A.L.F.A. proves its expertise in automobile construction by early motor sport successes. In spite of the sporting triumphs and the excellent image of the cars from Milan, the economical circumstances of Società Anonima Lombarda Fabricia Automobili are troubling as a result of the political and economical situation of those days. Soon the black clouds of World War I appear at the horizon and stop the production of civil automobiles in favour of war products. Thanks to the government orders, the high costs for labour and tooling of the not fully booked factory can be borne. It even comes worse: A.L.F.A. mistakenly does not buy Darraqc's shares. The Frenchman sells his shares to the Banca Italiana di Sconto which herewith acquires a majority shareholder stake. With fatal consequences: On 21 September 1915 the bank files A.L.F.A. for bankruptcy. The board of director is powerless in this event.

Giuseppe Merosi the first designing engineer of A.L.F.A.

Fortunately the Institute for the Financing and Development of the Italian War Industry (founded in in 1914) is interested in the founding of a new company, the "Accomandita Ing. Nicola Romeo & Co." On 2 December 1915 the bank delegates the responsibility for the new company to the employees. First general manager is the Napels born engineer Nicola Romeo.

Nicola Romeo, he names the company

It is not a large company, but the profitable war orders "will" weg lassen help the company to come back on its feet again after the war with the production of civil products. 1919 is the starting point of the new production of noble automobiles; making use of the excellent name of A.L.F.A. they are named Alfa Romeo. Thanks to the war profits and the after war economical boom, Alfa Romeo develops into one of Italy's leading car manufacturers.

The Alfa Romeo plant in Portello (Milano) 1924

Alfa Romeo, demonstrating its connection to the Milan head office with its company logo, is present on all major race tracks. In 1925 Alfa Romeo wins their first sports car championship of the world. At the wheel of the 140 HP P2 is Conte Brilli Peri.

In addition to the innovative cars with newest technology, the company produces tractors, trucks, busses, locomotives, train wagons as well as engines for ships and airplanes, with production facilities in Saronno, Naples, Triest and Rome.

However, the stock market crash on Black Friday in 1929 brings Alfa Romeo, like many other companies as well, at the edge of bankruptcy. To keep Alfa Romeo alive, and wanting to maintain another large car manufacturer in Italy next to Fiat, the Finmeccanica group, supported by IRI, the Italians Institute for Industrial resurrection (Istituto di Ricostruzione Industriale) overtakes Alfa Romeo in 1934. From 1930 the company is named "S.A. Alfa Romeo".

The Alfa Romeo automobiles of those days are the RL and RM series. Until World War II many very successful models with 6 and 8 cylinder engines between 1500 and 2900cc built for road and track follow. They represent the top in international automobile construction.

This is the Portello factory looked after the bombings in 1943

Then the lights go out over Europe. And when all is over, it is the same again: Clean up. Three bomb attacks in 1943 have destroyed 60% of the Portello factory; with the help of all 5.000 employees the company is rebuild.

As of 1946 the company is renamed in "Alfa Romeo S.p.A." and the first modified 6C2500 models leave the factory. With the end of the war, the huge demand for transportation required a different production method. Next to the less wanted, very expensive and complicated cars, the market has a demand for mass production cars. Alfa Romeo completes this change in 1950.

From the small factory in Portello (Milano) 1958...

In 1950, the year Alfa Romeo wins the world championship for the second time, the 4-cylinder Alfa Romeo 1900 is introduced. The 4-door saloon with monocoque body is a sensation. Although the technique can cope with the high Alfa Romeo standards, people are used to, Alfa Romeo's entrance into the segment of middle class cars does not only surprise the professional world. On its base several coupe and soft top versions are introduced. And, as tradition demands, the new cars from Milan are an instant success on track as well.

In 1954 the Guilietta the first "low budget" Alfa Romeo is introduced. The extension of the model range downwards proves to be a correct decision. The development of the Guilietta - only equiped with a 1300cc engine - is an instant success. Again, next to the saloon a coupe and a soft top (Spider) version are introduced. The Sprint called coupe comes with 4 different bodies. As always the beautiful cars are designed by well known designers as Bertone, Pininfarina and Zagato.

The ever expanding business soon outgrows the Portello factory. A new factory is soon built in Arese, followed in 1961 by a factory on the outskirts of Milan. In the same period a genial car, the unforgettable Giulia, is presented. Thanks to this first compact sports saloon, Alfa Romeo finally succeeds selling cars abroad as well. The Giulia was produced from 1962 to 1978 in Arese. With fascinating technique, sports car like top speed and acceleration, very interesting looks and, for those days, an exceptionally low Cw of 0.34, the Giulia becomes an affordable dream car.

... to the new one in Arese (Milano) 1961

One class above the Giulia the "2600" series is projected. Its outer appearance is very similar to the preceding 2000-series, but under the hood of the saloon, Coupé and Spider models a 6-cylinder engine develops up to 145 hp. When Touring, Alfa's body supplier for many years and also for the 2600 Spider, closes it's factory, the end of an era is apparent.

Not soon thereafter, based on the Giulia, the 1750 and 2000 Berlina are introduced. With the Berlina, the powerful DOHC-aluminium engines, introduced in the 1963 Giulia Sprint GT and the 1966 Spider, come into focus. Both Spider and the so-called "Bertone" coupe are a hit. The "Bertone" stays in production for 13 years. The Spider, designed and built by Pininfarina, is even produced for 27 years! The "Bertone" in the GTA lightweight version wins numerous European track races.

The 70's begin with three sensations. First the spectacular V8 sports car "Montreal" designed by Bertone's chief designer Marcello Gandini, and, almost at the same time, the new Saloon "Alfetta" with its trans-axle concept dating from the glorious Formula One world champion ship titles (engine in front, gearbox in the rear); this principle will be used for many models to come like the sensational RZ roadster. But the greatest attraction of all is the Alfasud, a revolutionary compact car. The Alfasud is made after a completely new design philosophy. For the production of the front wheel drive Alfasud a completely new factory was built near Naples in Pomigliano d'Arco. With it's large interior and the new rear, the Alfasud becomes the godfather of a new, and till today very important, class of compact cars. The timeless body design comes from ex-Bertone senior designer Giorgietto Giugiaro.

The Alfasud factory in Pomigliano d´Arco 1969

The Alfasud sells well. Nevertheless, with this unique car, pitiful times start. In spite of its dynamic boxer engine, perfect road handling and beautiful looks, the promising design does not contribute to the profitability of the company. The influence of politics, ongoing strikes and interventions by the "money suppliers" from Rome are devastating.

In the first half of the 80's the model range consists of the Spider, Alfasud, Alfasud Sprint, Giulietta, Alfetta, Alfetta GTV and Alfa 6. In 1983 the successor of the Alfasud, the 33, is introduced; with several big modifications, the 33 will remain in production for 12 years. In the end it develops 129 hp due to a new 16 V head. Next to the 5-door saloon, a station wagon version is launched in 1984, first named Giardinetta, later renamed Sportwagon. Just in time for the 75th company anniversary, the wedge shaped Alfa 75, based on the Giulietta, arrives in the show rooms. It will be the last Alfa Romeo to be built under the ownership of the Italian government.

In 1986 Fiat buys the Alfa shares from the Italian government. Finally, after 52 years, Alfa Romeo is privately owned again. Made as proof of their design capabilities, the unique appearance as well as the unprecedented road handling make the limited edition SZ (1000 cars) the company's sign board. More important for Alfa Romeo is the introduction of a large limousine; thanks to the new possibilities of the financially strong Fiat group, Alfa Romeo awakens to new life with the 164. Co-designing with several car manufacturers, as first done with the 164, will prove to be directional for the automotive world. Within the Fiat group the latter shows the way for Alfa Romeo to manufacture in a cost worthy way while giving room for maintaining their individuality. In spite of an intensive use of the synergy effects of the Fiat group, again and again Alfa Romeo succeeds in creating new models and types with typical Alfa Romeo properties. The successes of the Alfa Spider/GTV, Alfa 145/146, Alfa 156 and Alfa 166 are the best proof of this

Pomigliano d´Arco today, production plant of the Alfa 156

Where the new Spider starts a roadster renaissance, the Alfa 166 brings the sporty Italian style into the automobile upper class. The dynamics of the 156 follow the footsteps of the legendary Giulia. Being awarded with many prizes e.g. "Car Of The Year", the 156 brings Alfa Romeo new popularity. As always, and in best Alfa Romeo tradition, the 156, with its new design details, brings remembrance of old days without looking like a copy.

Ferrari And Alfa Romeo

The story tell everything

Don’t you ever notice that seeing a Ferrari always make people give a second look? If this modern car is not enough to make your friends jealous, then you would probably wonder what could. The Ferrari is one of the most popular sport vehicles in the world, and its default red color has even been named as Ferrari Red in other industries. If you want to own one and cannot afford a brand new one, you will be amazed that even the pre-owned and second hand styles are enough to give you that character in driving such a fancy modern car. But how did he start from simple race car enthusiast to world renowned business conglomerate?
Enzo Ferrari loved cars even as a young boy. He would accompany his father to several driving competitions to get to witness speeding vehicles on the racetrack. This helped inspire Enzo to be a driver himself, and participated in a few races. When he created the Team Ferrari in the late 1920s, there was really no intent for him to create, produce or manufacture road cars. The Team Ferrari, or also known as Scuderia Ferrari was only meant to support the amateur race car drivers that wanted to compete. Eventually, Enzo got hired by car company Alfa Romeo and became the head of their motor racing department.
You’ve probably heard of the Gestione Sportiva, but did you know that it used to be called Scuderia Ferrari? Scuderia in Italy means stable, but also referred to as Team Ferrari. In the past, Team Ferrari drivers would use Alfa Romeos for their races. Enzo Ferrari joined the Alfa Romeo team in the late 1930s and also built a few designs of his own. The esteemed company wanted to acquire Scuderia Ferrari, but he did not want to sell it. Instead, he decided to leave Alfa Romeo and build a company of his own.
It was quite difficult to establish an independent company because of his contract with his last employer, so Enzo decided to actively pursue another endeavor for the meantime: accessories. He called his workshop the Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari and maintained this for a couple of years.

The World War II was at its peak during this time, and because of the war, the first car he created — called the Tipo 815 — was not able to really enjoy the ability to race. Enzo decides to relocate, but his factory got bombed a year after. It seemed that things were not going very well for him, but he still remained steadfast and rebuilt his company after several years.
Enzo Ferrari worked for Alfa Romeo for the next couple of years, but he did not want to be constrained. Using the prancing horse as his logo, he started to work on the Scuderia Ferrari team, which entered in various racing competitions. By the 1930s, with eight victories and several awards in over 22 racing events, Enzo knew that he could make more out of his talent.
Ferrari has been in motorsports since his humble beginnings in the 1920s, but to the average car enthusiast, it becomes more than just a sport. It continues to be a symbol of luxury and excellence in the world of automobiles.

Alfa Romeo launched a new models in Malaysia

Alfa Romeo 159
Alfa Romeo is back alive and kicking with a launch of 4 new models in Malaysia all at once. Spearheading the list and expected to the the company’s volume seller here is the long-awaited Alfa Romeo 159, priced at RM 188,888.
Under the hood is a 2.2 liter JTS in line-4 twin cam engine mated to a 6-speed Selespeed automated manual transmission. The JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) is a direct injection lean burn engine that puts out 185 PS at 6,500rpm and 230Nm of torque at 4,500rpm, which is quite torquey for a 2.2 liter unit.
Alfa Romeo 159
The 159 has a decent level of equipment. We’re talking about a total of 9 airbags for the front, rear, side and driver knee, and there is also a front passenger airbag deactivation feature. Creature comforts include bi-xenon headlamps with washer, auto dimming rear view mirror, auto driving light control, follow me home headlamps, key less ignition, rain sensor wipers, paddle shifts, stability control, an 8 speaker sound system, a sunroof, and full leather upholstery.
Internationally, there is a new engine for the 2009 model year and it would be nice if Sime Darby Autoconnexxion has plans to bring it in for future variants if they deem it suitable, we’re talking about the TBi engine, which is a 1.8 liter engine with direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust. It put outs 200 PS and 320Nm of torque (a 230 PS variant is also available for the Brera/Spider), so the two models could be differentiated like the Audi A4 1.8 and 2.0.
But in any case it looks like those who have been buying the Accord 2.4 and Mazda 6 2.5 (don’t think Camry 2.4 buyers are in the same category!) can now opt to shell out a little more and enjoy a  Italian beauty!
Alfa Romeo GT
Next up is the Alfa Romeo GT Black line Coupe, powered by a 165 horsepower 206Nm torque 2.0 liter JTS engine mated to a 5-speed Selespeed, priced at RM 218,888. This sleek coupe never fails to turn heads but mechanically it is not very different from the Alfa GT sold by the distributor’s previous incarnation, Sime Darby Auto Italian.
The GT is equipped with a BOSE Hi-Fi system with amp and sub woofer, a CD player with MP3 capabilities, xenon headlamps, 8 airbags, stability control, and sports seats.
Alfa Romeo Brera
The Alfa Romeo Brera Coupe is priced at RM 308,888 and is powered by the same 2.2 liter JTS engine as the 159 sedan. You’ve got 7 airbags, stability control, 6 speakers, rain sensor wipers, key less ignition, bi-xenon headlamps, 8-way electrically adjustable front seats with heating for the driver’s seat, and leather upholstery.
The flagship and most expensive car is the 2-seat er Alfa Romeo Spider, also powered by the 2.2 liter JTS and 6-speed Selespeed. It’s priced at RM 318,888 and is essentially a soft top convertible version of the Brera.
Alfa Spider
The Spider’s equipment includes key less ignition, rain sensor wipers, cruise control, paddle shifts, 6-speakers, bi-xenon headlamps with washer, heated driver’s seat, stability control, and 5 airbags for the front and sides of the 2 passengers including a driver’s knee airbag.
There is more coming. The cute little hatch called the Mi To will be coming later this year to give the MINI Cooper and the Fiat 500 some competition. Look after the jump for full galleries the Bella's, including a few promo videos of the 159 and GT.

Concept Sport Car (Alfa-Romeo) 2010

New Alfa Romeo Sport Concept Car

New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarBertone returns to the Geneva Motor Show 2010, after a two year absence from the international scene, unveiling a concept car that makes its world premiere here: the Pandion, an aggressive yet beautiful coupe designed as a tribute to Alfa Romeos’ one hundred year anniversary. The Alfa Romeo Pandion Concept: an extreme and controversial sports car in typical Bertone fashion. The size of the concept car (4620 mm in length, 1971 mm wide, 1230 mm high, 2850 mm wheelbase) offers a compact sports car external dimensions with a large sports car interior feeling. Bertone Pandion Design Sketch offers a compact sports car external dimensions with a large sports car interior feeling, all powered by a 4.7 litre, 450 CV 8-cylinder Alfa Romeo engine.
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarThe name comes from the animal world, as Pandion Haliaetus is the scientific name for an Osprey: a sea hawk that nests and lives in coastal areas. The designers, led by Mike Robinson, have drawn inspiration from the wings of this predator to invent the spectacular door opening mechanisms, and from the hawks' facial markings to project the traditional Alfa family feeling into the next era of design.
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarThe designers, led by Mike Robinson, have drawn inspiration from the wings of this predator to invent the spectacular door opening mechanisms, and from the hawks’ facial markings to project the traditional Alfa family feeling into the next era of design. In almost a century of Bertone tradition, it is not the first time that natural wonders have inspired the names of concept cars. Just think of the Corvair Testudo (1963) and, by no coincidence, the Alfa Romeo Canguro (1964), Carabo (1968) and Delfino (1983).
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarAccording to this interpretation, the Pandion’s design is, like every Alfa Romeo, a perfect synthesis between ‘Skin and Frame’, an ideal balance resulting from a tension between opposites: technology and sensuality, rationality and instinct, architecture and sculpture, structuralism and organic ism, industrial excellence and excellent craftsmanship.
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarThe Pandion’s taut and muscular body is the result of an original interpretation of the Alfa Romeo badge, where the man-eating snake depicted there represents the attraction of elegance (what we call the ‘Skin’), and the aristocratic cross symbolises the rigour of rational thought, the technological aspect (what we call the ‘Frame’).

New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarThe design of the Pandion is based on a concept Robinson calls: "Skin & Frame” - a new interpretation of the inherent duality in the 100 year old Alfa Romeo logo. “Skin” refers to the snake in the logo, representing the world renowned Italian excellence in beautiful, seductive forms; and “Frame” refers to the cross in the logo, representing the mechanical excellence in high performance Italian race cars. The combination of the two has now become a dynamic dial searching for an ideal balance resulting from the tension between opposites: technology and sensuality, rational and emotional, architectural layout and sculptural form, structural and organic, industrial excellence and artisan excellence.
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarAccording to this interpretation, the vibrant energy in every Alfa Romeo is represented by Pandions’ spinal structure (or ‘Frame’), which crosses the length of the car from the V-shaped grille in the nose of the car to the V-shaped bumper in the tail of the car, crossing the interior as a visually aesthetic structural element which supports the surrounding shell (or ‘Skin’).
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarThe Alfa Romeo Pandion Concept has the profile of a true sports car, with no room for compromise. The architectural layout is 'cab rearward', meaning the passenger compartment is positioned towards the rear of the car and the long bonnet pushes the car's visual centre rearward. The body side visually connects the sensuous front end with the razor-edged rear by means of an extremely long flowing side window which stretches from front wheel arch to rear, enhancing the excellent accessibility of this low-bodied sports coupe.
New Alfa Romeo Sports Concept CarSince sports cars are traditionally difficult to get in and out of, this important ergonomic activity has been facilitated with an extra wide door opening to make up for the low roof line. This new graphic formula not only adds a striking new visual division between the upper and lower parts of the body, but it also offers an incredible panorama window for passengers inside. The strong diagonal dark-light division in the rear of the side view accentuates the powerful rear wheel drive layout and draws special attention to the hidden door opening mechanism

What you need to know about Alfa Romeo

Alfa History
Alfa Romeo's place in motoring history began in 1906 under the name of Societa Anonima Italian Darracq (SAID) founded by French entrepreneur Alexandre Darracq. The cars produced were unsuited for local conditions, unreliable and underpowered. Within three years, the company was on the brink of bankruptcy and changed its name to Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobile or A.L.F.A.

The first A.L.F.A., Vettura 24HP

After the 1st world war, the future of the company seemed bleak. An industrialist and mining engineer named Nicola Romeo stepped in, bought into A.L.F.A. and took over as managing director. A.L.F.A. was then making tractors, aero-engines, railway equipment and compressors and car-making then was a distant reminder of the pre-war days.
In 1918, there was no demand for Romeo's products as the war had ended. Cars were in short supply and the car market was booming. Romeo turned to car production and managed to produce cars from 1914 parts stored during the outbreak of war. However, new designs and marketing strategies were badly needed. A new name was also needed as A.L.F.A was outdated. Romeo was linked with heavy industrial engineering with no significance to car buyers. Nicola Romeo found the perfect solution by combining the links of the past with the future as part of an engineering group well respected for its high quality and efficiency. Thus, Alfa Romeo of Milan was born.
